John Boyega has recently teased a gay romance between his character Fin and Poe, something I think all of us thought was on the cards whilst watching The Force Awakens. But this is something Star Wars needs to get right, or all hell will break loose.
Considering how diverse a community we are here on Earth, we are light years from a galaxy far far away. A Sci Fi mega franchise which so far has seen 100’s of different species and characters, not once have we seen a same sex pairing. But lets be honest here, we’ve only ever seen 2 heterosexual relationships over all the movies. Star Wars is waiting now for its first big screen LGBTQ character to appear, I’m confident that its coming. But those folks over at Star Wars need to make sure they do it for the right reasons, and not just for public pressure.
Since the release of The Force Awakens in December 2015, fans have speculated at a possible relationship between former storm trooper Finn and Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac. I can remember watching this and thinking – definitely Fin was the bottom 🙂
During an interview with Metro, John Boyega, was asked whether he thinks the movie series has a responsibility to push for equal representation.
“There definitely is that responsibility, but more the responsibility to hire those from those experiences to share their creative light, that’s the pivotal thing,” the actor explained.
“If you just hire the same sort of people you’re just getting the same sort of film. It’s not wrong, but then there’s a lack of variety.”
“I think that Oscar is always looking at me with love in his eyes, and I guess that the fans saw it,” John continued. “And then they realised that either he needs to chill or come out.” John said regarding the connection between the two characters.
And its not just one of the film’s stars commenting on this, big chief Kathleen Kennedy also added;
“After 40 years of adventures, people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the path these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read and pay attention to,” she said.
“We’ve talked about it, but I think you’re not going to see it in The Last Jedi,” she continued. “In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop next.”
Which is a great sign in my eyes, you have to think since the franchise came back with new films there was a lot that these new films had to do. The first thing they did was create more pivotal roles for women, something the previous 2 trilogy’s failed to do. Something I believe they have done well with new characters, like Rey and Jin.
So to the fans screaming that this is an outrage we’ve not had LGBTQ characters in the films before, chill out guys! They’ve only just got the women’s roles right, let them catch up a bit.
What I don’t want them to do is rush it and get it wrong, I really don’t want some Captain Jack(Doctor Who, Torchwood) character turning up making dick jokes with a light sabre, that would be awful.
THE OLD REPUBLIC IS ALREADY DOING THIS?
I can remember playing KOTOR years ago and playing as a female character, just so the hot Carth Onasi would flirt with me and tell me he loved me. Sounds stupid but to me engrossed in such an amazing storyline that KOTOR was, I would rather of ended up fucking Carth, than end up with Bastilla. But isn’t that the point as a gay lad playing Xbox?.
When the online version The Old Republic came out, it wasn’t long till same sex romances were introduced, and I couldn’t of been happier. I can remember reading the backlash when the news was broke, one woman wrote;
“For god sake is this really necessary? Why bring this into computer games? Can’t kids just play games?”
Firstly these games are designed and aimed at people early teens onwards, and at that age they pretty much know what they are feeling. I would of loved seeing a gay relationship on role play games when I was younger, and to be honest am jealous of that age group that get to experience that now. But I will always remember my first love – Carth 🙂
Like I said before Star Wars needs to get this right, and make it realistic to a same sex relationship. I can’t believe the comments that Star Trek is getting from the fans about the first gay relationship there. I trust in Star Wars and the writers to do this well, and give people a great role model to the fans in this amazing universe.
